Wine Press Northwest Selects Westport Winery as Washington's "Winery to Watch" in 2011

The preeminent wine publication in the region, Wine Press Northwest, has selected Westport Winery as the Washington "Winery to Watch" for 2011. Each year the publication selects one "Winery of the Year" and one "Winery to Watch" from Washington, Oregon, Idaho, and British Columbia. Past recipients of this award have gone on to earn Winery of the Year recognition.

Andy Perdue, editor of Wine Press Northwest, headquartered in the Tri-Cities, interviewed winery co-owner, Kim Roberts, on February 17, for the announcement and feature article in the magazine's spring issue. The following Saturday, photographer Jackie Johnston visited the winery for a hectic photo shoot with the entire Roberts family during a surprising record sales day for the winery.

Even though the family was asked by the magazine not to make the award public until the magazine's release they sent a letter of gratitude to their staff about this recognition by stating, "It would seem we are on the right track. And even though our family works hard with this in mind, we simply could not make these efforts and accomplishments without your commitment. We are so fortunate and blessed to have each of you on our team."

With this award being made public, the Roberts further extend their appreciation to the Grays Harbor community and their wine club members throughout WashingtonState and the rest of the United States. Kim Roberts said, "We could not have made this wonderful journey alone. The kindness and enthusiasm shown to this business and our family, has been overwhelming."

Do you like fresh Dungeness Crab?

Prime Dungeness is available from retailers and private sellers straight from the boat. Cruise the Marina District and look for the signs. You should expect to pay $5 - $7 per crab. Ask the seller to section them. You can cook about 8 pairs of section in 722's largest pot. Boil your crab for 10 minutes and cool quickly with cold water.

Commercial fishermen in Westport land about 14 million pounds of Dungeness Crab every year. Connoisseurs consider Dungeness the finest for its delicate, slightly sweet flavor. Although available all year, the motherlode of crab is landed from January - April.

There is even a Crab Race. This year it will be held on April 16th and 17th!

Shucking tools are found in 722 Westport's kitchen. Rather someone else does the work? Retailers in Westport and Tokeland will be happy to provide beautiful, fresh crab meat ready to eat as well as live and whole cooked crab!

Coming home from Westport with a 14-15 pound King is a successful day in most foks view. Add a Coho or another King and hey that's a really good day! Well, how about 2 20 pounders? What do we call that? Your choice! More than just a few folks had that result today. Best of the year so far! Not everyone is catching 2 20 pounders but most all are catching 2 salmon and most are Kings and a majority of the Kings are in the upper teens dressed! I'd certainly be think about getting down her in the near future!

722 Westport had a prime 6 night period open up - August 16 - 21. Fishing is now open 7 days per week. Ever filled a freezer full of ocean protien? You can now!

Westport Albacore Tuna is in - available into Sept.

The Seafood Connection will have Albacore Tuna available this weekend! For people who want to buy tuna, I will be back in early Sunday morning or possibly sooner. You can call the store to reserve some super fresh, first of the season Albacore Tuna. The price will be $1.99 per pound for whole fish. If you want your fish filleted, there is a $3 per fish fillet charge. If you have any questions, call Rich at the store at 360-268-1628. I\'ve got to go, we just hooked three more fish!

Kings, Kites and Canning Tuna

The Washington Department of Fish and Wildlife reported today that the King limit has been increased to two fish. Daily limit remains two fish, one or both of which may be a marked Silver. All wild Silvers must be released.

I'm going to stick my next out and predict that within a month we will see a 7 day per week fishery and maybe even another limit raise by September. Wouldn't that be nice.

This weekend promises the Westport Windriders Kite Festival, absolutely beautiful weather and probably the first of the fresh Albacore Tuna (Seafood Connection) hitting the dock. I find myself wishing I was going to 722 Westport this weekend!

722 Westport currently has two periods left on the calendar. July 21 - 23 and August 16 - 25. For the Auaust period we are looking for a minimum of one week. If you grab all 10 we'll try and make a deal you can't refuse!

King Salmon fishing opened on the 12th in Westport. Weather was poor for the first few days but that has changed. 20+ boats are limiting every fishable day!

Ocean Salmon Opener June 12th

Excitment is building within the Westport community. This Saturday a special King Salmon Fishery opens 7 days a week through the 30th with a two fish limit!

Following the June action, the regular Salmon fishery will open July 4 - September 19 (Sunday through Thursday) or until the quota is exhausted.

You can keep track of the updated action through the Westport Charterboat Assoc. website!

Migratory shorebird action starts in Westport this month. Surround yourself with nature at it's finest; now is the time to visit South Beach. The Gray Whales are also showing; juvenile males and young females. May will be the time the cows and calves linger.
The 15th annual Grays Harbor Shorebird Festival will be held the last weekend of April. Spring came early; the birds may too. You can enjoy the migration in our front yard during most of April and May!
Bottle Beach State Park, less than 10 minutes from 722 Westport, is an excellent place to check out at low tide. Dowitcher, Dunlin, Plover, Sandpiper and Whimbrel are plentiful. Can your kids identify them? Why not learn together. Do a school report as a family.
The serious birder knows all about palagic tours offered by Westport Seabirds. These boat trips run 35 miles due west to the edge of the contenental shelf (Grays Canyon) from Spring until Fall. Many of these birds never come to shore in this area. Think Shearwater and Albatross! And don't forget the marine mammals which you will surely see.
Calfornia Brown Pelicans? Thousands will arrive in April and May. They roost on the jetties of the Marina District but fly formation along the beach and dive in the surf all day long. At the end of the day there will be long lines of birds returning to the roost for the night. Don't worry about missing them. They'll be here into October.
